The Yorkshire Dales National Park is a showcase for some of the finest limestone scenery in Europe. Covering 680 square miles, it can be divided naturally into a number of pockets, each with a discernible character. One of these is the area known widely as the Three Peaks. Extremely popular with visitors from the Lancashire coastal belt and the mill towns north of Manchester, the Three Peaks lie on the western fringe of the National Park and consist of Whernside (2416 ft), Ingleborough (2376 ft) and Pen-y-Ghent (2278 ft). This area straddles the upper reaches of the River Ribble and displays classic geological features including extensive limestone pavement, impressive cave systems such as White Scar Caves, England's highest waterfall and Britain's second-largest underground cavern. Whernside is the highest peak in Yorkshire and Ingleborough has a huge Iron Age hill fort on its summit. Steam trains still run through the area on the Settle to Carlisle railway over the picturesque viaduct at Ribblehead. Each year the area hosts the Three Peaks Challenge in which fell-runners and walkers aim to tackle the three summits in 12 hours. The Pennine Way traverses the summit of Pen-y-Ghent and the Ribble Way follows the river from its source near the foot of Whernside. |
